Just a wonderful piece of music, unforgettable. Phill and Tim and the band take a bow.

I love Judd's obviously Manzanera-influenced guitar here, as well as solos on Time For A Change and The Woman Who Loves You. He actually out-does Manzanera on all counts of melody, weirdness, off centre playing and that fractured spindly treble, as well as his fuzztone. And does it with real style. The solo on The Woman Who Loves You puts me in a tizzy. It just goes everywhere.

the story can be found in the wikipedia page of the album and the band's dicography. Phil was still in the line-up for this album. it is their American debut release, as "Mental Notes" was only released in New Zealand & Australia. not all the tracks are the same in both albums, only 4 tracks were re-recorded for this album. it also had a different producer - Phil Manzanera from Roxy Music.

I am (also) still unclear on the cuts like this one from "Second Thoughts". It doesn't just sound like a band with more miles under their belt and beefier production, it sounds like a different band... The guitar solo at 2:29 doesn't sound like the same lead playing from the original. I had also read Phil left the band around '76. Do you know anything about the lineup and/or why this album was (to my ears) completely rerecorded? or was this just remixed? Thanks very much for uploading.

the song first appeared on the debut LP by Split Enz, titled "Mental Notes". this is the version that appeared on the second LP, "Second Thoughts". it is slightly longer, and for my taste - better. it wasn't on youtube; only the one from the first album was on youtube. hope this helps.

The enz apex. Quite stunning lateral musicality.
