I had a song book that had this song in it circa 1964. I played piano then and after all this time (I'm 60) I remember playing it. I really loved this song and am happy that I could re-connect. Wish I had the songbook.

unfortunately, the author of this song had to sell old black joe! Fuck, it sure was nice of him to write this song, makes me cry everytime whitey shows how barbaric and savage he really is even when he is trying not to be.

My daddy used to sing this to me when I was very young, around 5 or so, and I would cry and cry. Now hearing this after all these years, I still cry. I don't know if I'm crying for Old Black Joe or my father who's been gone over 20 years now. Probably both. <3

My mom used to sing this to me when I was little. It was so beautiful and sad. Now as an adult I can view it in a more historical context, but it is still a beautiful, sad song.
