To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead, JamBase teamed with Telefunken to produce the Songs Of Their Own video series. We began with a list of 100 Grateful Dead original songs (exclusively their tunes, not covers they often played) and tapped many of our favorite artists to record a cover version either at the JamBase office in San Francisco or at one of the many venues around town and beyond. No song was allowed to be covered twice, and today’s participants McLovins steered their way through “West L.A. Fadeaway.”

“West L.A. Fadeaway” entered the Grateful Dead live lexicon on August 28, 1982 at the Oregon County Fairgrounds in Veneta, Oregon. The Hunter/Garcia song was later included on the band’s second to last studio album, 1987’s In The Dark and was released as the LP’s third single. It became a staple of their 1980s setlists and stayed in the band’s live repertoire until its final live rendition on June 30, 1995 in Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium.

Though its members are younger than the song itself, Hartford, Connecticut-based jam quartet McLovins proved the kids are still all right with their sleek arrangement of “West L.A. Fadeaway.” The first of our entries recorded at the South Windsor, Connecticut studios of our Songs Of Their Own partner and microphone supplier Telefunken, drummer Jake Huffman, bassist Jason Ott, guitarist Justin Berger and keyboardist Atticus Kelly tested out some of the company’s laboratory space that doubles as a sound stage and recording studio earlier this month.
