"Some Velvet Morning" was written by Lee Hazlewood and recorded by Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra in late 1967. It first appeared on Sinatra's album Movin' With Nancy, the soundtrack to her 1967 television special of the same name . The song peaked at number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 in February 1968.

Lyrics:

Lee:

Some velvet morning when I'm straight

I'm gonna open up your gate

And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra

and how she gave me life

and how she made it in

Some velvet morning when I'm straight

Nancy:

Flowers growing on the hill

Dragonflies and daffodils

Learn from us very much

Look at us but do not touch

Phaedra is my name

Lee:

Some velvet morning when I'm straight

I'm gonna open up your gate

And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra

and how she gave me life

and how she made it in

Some velvet morning when I'm straight

Nancy:

Flowers are the things we knew

Secrets are the things we grew

Learn from us very much

Look at us but do not touch

Phaedra is my name

Lee:

Some velvet morning when I'm straight

Nancy:

Flowers growing on the hill

Lee:

I'm gonna open up your gate

Nancy:

Dragonflies and daffodils

Lee:

And maybe tell you 'bout Phaedra

Nancy:

Learn from us very much

Lee:

And how she gave me life

Nancy:

Look at us but do not touch

Lee:

and how she made it in

Heard this on art bell C2C could never figure out what song it was, because it was always the middle of the night and I couldn't look it up, and could never remember the lyrics in the morning.

in the Greek myth Phaedra is married to Theseus, but is in love with his son (from another woman). in one version Phaedra writes her husband and tells him that Hippolytus has raped her.(which is untrue)..guess what happens next--Theseus kills his son (or puts into motion a chain of events that will result in his death) and Phaedra kills herself out of guilt............unsure what this has to do with the song....

I'd like to know what this song is supposed to be about. I wondered about that when it came out and 46 years later I still don't know. It's a very haunting song. Once it's in your head it stays for a long time.

Anybody know where on the California coast this was filmed? The setting itself has an enigmatic quality which only adds to the sense of mystery in the lyrics.

Am I wrong to think he killed himself over this girl? It sounds like a casket-"Velvet", "straight" as in lying stiff, "gate" as in gate to the graveyard?

Without doubt Nancy Sinatra's weirdest recording and pre-video, videoclip! In 2003 the London Telegraph's music critics voted it the best duet ever. The Telegraph also called it, "One of the strangest, druggiest, most darkly sexual songs ever written - ambitious, beautiful and unforgettable."
