After disappearing into the attic of Uncle Matt's house on Long Island for a long winter with their casios & samplers, Josh Kolenik and Ryan Heyner emerged with pop songs melding strange beats, dreamy synths, tape hiss & laid-back melodies. Teaming up with longtime collaborators Juan Pieczanski and Jeff Curtin, the band fleshed out the bedroom sound for live performance, combining a full drum kit with sampled drums, live bass, keyboards and samplers. After tearing through nine shows in under a week for CMJ, the band was asked to play in a wide range of places, from small art spaces to big venues and everything in between.
Described by Pitchfork as "absurdly addictive" and "soul-stirring," Small Black released their self-titled EP on CassClub on October 13th. After completing a split 7-inch remix project with Washed Out (out soon on Lovepump United), as well as a UK single for "Despicable Dogs" (out now on Transparent), the band is gearing up to finish the full LP in an empty house in Delaware over the next few months.
