Things are going to get weird in the shop today, with one of my all-time favorite bands: Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Widening Eye

All music is derivative.Very rarely is there anything new under the sun. That being said, these guys are great!

They play the music that has long been lost to the ear of humans and amphibious creatures. Thank you SGM for this wonderful musical return to primal grace.

Similar to James Scott's comment, I'm gonna say this recording is "borrowing" a little too much from "Larks Tongues in Aspic" starting at 3:53. This group does have some good numbers otherwise.

To me it sounds like a King Crimson instrumental, Kinda like if Lark's Tongues In Aspic and Thrak had a kid.

I feel the need to find the symbolism in this video. Anyone wanna help me out?

No Name

It would be classified as surrealist art. It's a tip of the hat to the Surrealist movement, as Dadaism (their main gimmick) preceded and influenced surrealism. To paraphrase their description of the song, "it's about how reality seems strange when compared with dreams," or some such thing, which is just about exactly the surrealist message. As for the content of the video, it means whatever the symbols bring up in your mind.

Of course we can draw similarities toward Zappa, Mr Bungle and even Gojira or Meshugga or whatever teenagers listen too. But for me the best comparement is if Mike Patton joined King Crimson in the making of Larks Tounges In Aspic and then suddenly Bjørk nocked at the door playing fiddle.

It just... *is*. Either you appreciate it, or you don't.

That's a shame 'cause I have no idea. The video is just weird imagery for a weird song, I might be wrong. But STGMs' music however has more to it. But I don't get this one it still sounds cool.

The video or the song?

Infact you always find Zappa at the chain start. Cardiacs are one of the greatest bands ever, despite 99% of people don't even know they exist.

The only reason Mr Bungle is mentioned so much whenever a band sounds even slightly strange is due to people not having a wide enough taste in music ... Mr Bungle is great and all (Seriously love their music) ... But please, go listen to music that isn't classified as "Alternative Rock" and get a larger musical vocabulary. SGM references so much "serious" music ... from Philip Glass, Stravinsky, Cage ... folk music, industrial, etc

well your respond was made 2 yrs ago but anyways you made no mention of cardiacs then or zappa , so i dunno i've been a huge fan of mr bungle since i was 17 i'm 28 now and i can tell you their might be some similiraty because they all got influenced by the same muses but bungle and stgm are 2 complete different bands, nills first band idiot flesh actually sounds more like the bungle sound, but this in no way am i going to agree with you. bungle had a funk/ska phase and background stgm didn't.
