My mother was born in 1920 in a log house in the Missouri Ozarks. She grew up there and in the Missouri Bootheel, back when the Bootheel was almost frontier. She grew up singing the blues--and she was white. When I bought my first guitar in the early 1980s, she astonished me by picking it up and playing blues songs on it. The early history of the blues is far more tangled than we currently understand. I think that it is inaccurate to claim that it was exclusively African American music.

I think it's definitely not fair to say white people don't understand the blues. It's not like these guys were singin about oppression and slavery. They're talking about losing their loves and working for a living and their spirituality. These songs resonate with so many people because they weren't written with a particular demographic in mind, they just came right out of the soul. Why should a black person understand that any better than a white one?

@SqueezeMyLemonBabe yeah, without knowing the exact chord voiceings it can be difficult to get "that exact sound"....especially primitive artists that may have used unconventional, oddball finger positions

@SqueezeMyLemonBabe come on man, saying that whites don't know what the blues is is like saying blacks don't know what classical music is....same thing. Us whites have a lot of things to be blue about...our 401K's are crashing, there is a country wide shortage of mayonaise and Wonder Bread, we don't know how to dance, our kids walk around with baggy pants and sideways hats, The Klan upped the yearly membership dues......it's hard to get by

@FierySkillz This is true but the main reason people can't play his tunes is not because they're hard to play, its because only Johnson who wrote the tunes could play them properly, just as Son House and others play their own separate tunes. It is impossible to recreate, especially by whites who have no true idea what the blues is. robert Johnson took to the road and probably did nothing but play guitar - explanation for his talent.

@FierySkillz : I'll chime in: Robert Johnson was a technically superior guitarist to Son House, and was said to have been able to play in any style. He was a virtuoso, influenced by Lonnie Johnson as much as by House. However, his voice is not as good as Son's, IMO, and I would consider Son (and Patton) to be more soulful. In fact, House may be the definition of soul, along with Blind Willie Johnson, who was also a better guitarist. I listen to Son and Blind Willie more than RJ these days.

@SqueezeMyLemonBabe Also we shouldn't argue over who was best. I can listen to Son, Patton Johnson, James etc all day long. I only responded because you said that Johnson is over rated and not very talented which I think is just plain wrong. I'm sorry but you cannot argue that Johnson is the most popular of all the Delta players. This is not down to gimmicks or hype. Also he was extremely talented on guitar. Barely anyone on youtube can play his guitar parts right. 80 years later with tab etc.

@SqueezeMyLemonBabe I think both SonHouse and Patton are excellent but Johnson's work surpasses both of them. Look, art is subjective and like I said I don't think you'll find many who will agree with you. Johnson copied from Son etc but his skill was to take all the best elements and package them in great 3min pop blues songs. Do you play guitar? How on earth can you even compare Johnson's slide work to Son's? Son could barely play guitar while Johnson's still one of the greatest ever.

@FierySkillz Ok, Clapton is not a blues musician, so his opinion on Robert Johnson doesnt matter. Neither does hits on youtube. Thats just cause nobody knows any other blues musicians. If you listen to Sons music, and then you listen to Roberts, you might see that Robert tried to imitate son house a lot with his vocal and slide producation (and failed). Son House is the father of the blues right next to Charlie Patton, to call Robert Johnson better than him is almost blasphemy.

@SqueezeMyLemonBabe I honestly can't take you seriously when you say Johnson is not an entertaining musician. He is easily the most influential of all the Delta/Folk bluesmen. Ask Clapton or Keith Richards who both are surely more qualified than yourself. Look at all the Delta blues on youtube and Johnson has by far and away the most hits. This is not down to hype or marketing. I also find it amazing that you can think SonHouse is a better musician. I'm sure not many will agree with you.

@FierySkillz I personally believe that Johnson is not an entertaining musician. His music is simply too lacking in a certain element to amuse me. On the other hand, it is undeniable that he had an amazing talent, he just didn't utilize it as well as his peers. Son House has an extremely simple style, but the emotion and the musical 'element' as I'll call it, is what he has, that Robert doesnt, which makes him so much better of a musician... Robert is no king of any music, in my opinion.

@SqueezeMyLemonBabe Your ramblings make no sense. At first you say Johnson isn't that great. By the end of your rant you say he is great. You also say his style is very simple (nonsensical statement) but list Son House as being a better player. Duh! Also, people like Jefferson, Hurt etc played a different genre of blues. Skip James may have been technically better but to this day Johnson is still King of the Twelve Bars.

@TheSydafect No, Robert Johnson sounds nothing like skip, and he is nowhere near as talented, if you ask me. In my opinion, Robert Johnson isn't even that great, compared to people like Son House and Skip, John Hurt, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blake and Gary Davis. His style is very simple and over-rated and his music just doesn't have the kick that others have. Once again, in my opinion. And not that hes not great, cause he is, I just dont like him personally and dont listen to him.
