We must keep in mind that the kids of the 70s had their parents or grandparent fight in WWII. So using Nazi symbols was one way to riled the older people up. Looking back at it, it was a very bad idea. Younger kids lacking the context will just see early punk and its fascination with Nazism as a neo-nazi movement rather than just kids being annoying as hell.

I used to hide behind the settee when Captain Scarlett came on. Loved the programme but the intro totally freaked me out - don't know if it was the shooting or the Mysterons but I had nightmares for years about it. Early mind-control experiment I think!

The Banshees were anything but Nazi's. Sadly they (the Nazis) had the best imagery but the worst brain process. Our generation grew up in the shadow of WW2, Our families had lived through it and fought in it (My mum lost 6 brothers). Throwing the swastika into the mix in the early punk days was pure rebellion.Shock value, nothing deeper, Going back to the Hells Angels, The Stooges, New York Dolls and uncle tom cobbly. You had to be there.

You have to understand the context of the times that early punk culture arose from. Growing up in 60's and 70's UK involved being force fed celebration of the 2WW, in film, cartoons, tv shows etc... you couldn't escape it. So wearing of the Nazi swastika was an ultimate defiant act of rebellion against the previous generations. Once the taboo had been broken though, it very quickly lost its potency and with the rise of contemporary fascism, the Punk culture took on a strong anti-fascist stance.

Quite honestly it would be no problem for me were Siouxsie Jewish. I love early punk and Jewish folk are very well represented there, from Lou Reed to Malcolm McLaren to half the Ramones/both of Suicide/all of the Dictators etc, etc... Siouxsie definitely isn't Jewish though. One's mum has to be one and hers isn't, Neither did Siouxsie convert to Judaism, and in fact she has gone on record several times explaining that she is not and never has been Jewish. Sure wish she'd tour again...

in the 80s siouxsie decided to use swastika as a sign of rebellion, to draw attention and get the masses, she was the first that kicked skinhead0s arses at their concert -- with a microphone !! I did read a lot to know that she hated hate and wanted to promote unity and creativity.

I don't think she is jewish or christian or anything, she's an atheist I suppose!! Even if she was, who cares as long as she's so fucking genius !! Wearing a swastika when you yourself hate racists & nazis & facsists & cunts, is just soo provocative & I think it is quite fun in the late 1970s context !!! By the way she did this in reference to a movie if I remember well.
