Yeah, he is a really good guy. He doesn't have an arrogant bone in his body. I like drummers as human beings as well as musicians and that's why Lars Ulrich doesn't do a thing for me. HE is an arrogant jerk! AND, he's not all that great a drummer, in my opinion. Jeff Porcaro was a great guy, Steve Gadd is a humble, great human, etc.

Thanks! It IS confusing, but it's not your fault! LOL. I need to find a book that explains the entire concept of odd times and really learn this. Thanks for your help.

No, it's not a stupid question. Yes, 6/8 is counted 1-2-3-4-5-6; but it's the emphasis of the dotted quater that makes it 6/8 and not 3/4, but there are exceptions to this rule. Dotted quarter= 1-2-3. If you Count to six and snap your fingers on the 1 and 4 then you have 6/8: (1)-2-3-(4)-5-6. If you snap your fingers on the 1,3 and 5 then you have 3/4: (1)-2-(3)-4-(5)-6. 3/4 and 6/8 = in value, differ in phrasing. But as i said before, there are exceptions. Hope this wasn't to confusing,

Okay. You all are going to crucify me for asking this incredibly stupid question but how does one actually count odd time? I only play basic beats and some shuffles but I taught myself those. Simon is playing 6/8, so would somebody just count 1-2-3-4-5-6? That can't be it, that would be much too easy.

If I could play the drums like this, I'd be performing with Toto. Simon Phillips is one of the most creative and technically proficient drummers in the world. Period. An absolute phenomenon. Giving credit where it's due. I have heard that he is extremely humble, and it certainly appears to be true in interviews of Simon that I've seen.

There was one song I heard for YEARS, maybe DECADES and it ALWAYS sounded like the drum part was backwards (snare where the bass should be & vice versa) until half way into the 1st verse when it magically straightened itself out without anything changing, then, a few years ago, I FINALLY heard it the right way & understood what it's supposed to be!! I think it took me starting the song a few seconds in before I was able to hear it the right way! lol. Couldn't tell you which song it was, though.

yeah i see what you mean... sometimes my brain just wants to divide it into another time signature and it just makes me hear it that way then too...

Sometimes I have this "ability", if you will, to hear other timings going on besides the ones foremost, and that's what I was hearing on 1st listen, but I hear the 6/8, now. In a way this "ability" can be a bad thing, like, when I come up with a really complex beat and I want to figure out what it is I'm doing, as soon as I try to figure it out, it all falls to bits and I usually end up losing the beat completely. If I just go ahead & play the beat without dissecting it, I can play it any time.

Great drumming. Very nice flow in timing. Combined with excellent Sycopation accents. Good stuff by Simon. Basskat Detroit MI.
