I think he was. The Pumpkins have a song called "Suffer" on their first album and a part always reminds me of the "tu du du du"s in "Rio" (before the choruses). When Billy sings "And you're saying you're seeing, you're saying who you are/What takes meaning is cleaning the meaning of who you are" and later "'Til we're safe from the wounds of desire and pain/You must rise from the mounds of desire and change". Same vocal melody.

Splitting Atoms

As a musician I am fine with interpretation and making the song your own but when the music is not accurate it is hard to be objective. The original song is very powerful dark and brilliant. If we are taking away from the song by not making an effort to play it correctly I am just not a fan of that approach. Thank you for your comment.
