This song is taken from an album of previously unreleased material that was first issued on "RCA APL1-1778" in 1976. Though the songs themselves are from the period 1969-70, and recorded during sessions for the albums; Canned Wheat(1969), and American Woman(1970). By 1976 The Guess Who were all but history so RCA started to raid its corporate vaults for material to release before the band lost all of its fan base and sales potential.

Several of the songs off this compilation LP had "Hit" potential written all over them, including "Silver Bird"...so I'm not entirely sure why they didn't appear on any of the aforementioned albums, or at the very least released as singles.

This song has always been a favorite of mine.

Can you imagine this song b/w "The Answer"---only question is which is the A side--easily top ten US if released during "No Time" and "Undun" era. Unbelievable. Same for "Runnin Down the Street" and "Take the Long Way Home." These songs put the master craftsmanship of these four guys on display for one last memorable time. Unmatched, in my book.

def heard this on the radio -cant remember if it was on am or fm -or after stereo fm went from album tracks to hit singles -people forget that AM in mono was never an issue till "headphone" hits came out -country classics were often mono -early sixties stuff too [-we didnt get AM stereo til the 90's ??] -remember when stock car radios got yanked for "stereo 8 tracks and cassette + AM/FM radio" pkgs??

I saw The Hip play at a bowling alley type venue in Calgary back in 1989 called The Silver Dollar Action Centre. This was the same year their debut album was released, along with the smash hit "New Orleans Is Sinking". The venue was a block from where I used to work, so a bunch of us walked over t check them out. Great show, and Brian looked like a crazed mad-man with his long scraggly hair, Lol. At that time, nobody in the US had heard of them, or for the next 10-20 years either.

You are right about The Hip, they've never been able to crack the mainstream (which is really unfortunate). Luckily, I heard them play on a rock station during my college years and I've been a fan of them ever since. Growing up less than 100 miles from parallel 49 allowed me to have that experience. To me, they are the best modern band from Canada irregardless of their impact on mainstream music overall. That's my opinion anyway.

Yes, they were great. But if anything you've got that backwards, or totally wrong all together. The Hip are not even close to being on the same level. The Hip have never charted as many hits, and are not world wide phenomenon's. If it wasn't for the Guess Who breaking early ground (30 years before The Hip) and forging their way into the US and International market...well, you know where I'm coming from. My wife's from Mexico City, and never heard of The Hip. But The Guess Who? Very familiar :)

These guys are probably the best Canadian band of all time, up there with the Tragically Hip. I wish I had grown up with this music playing the background, but all I had was "American Woman". Thank you for uploading this.

Now that is real music, not that crap from Brazilian funk.

Great tune, should have got more air time, would have been a big hit! I think.

oh yes, Live at the Paramount was a fantastic album. The best version ever of 'American Woman' was done at this live performance in Seattle. There was a great deal of talent within the group.

BTO's best years were over by 1976. Burt was the stiffest competition around that time. Silver Bird was never a hit, but it did have "hit potential", and may have achieved that had it been released when it was recorded, and not 7 years later. That's what people have been saying within this thread.

I remember Silver Bird getting airplay in 1976, but it wasn't a big hit. By then, it would have had to compete with whatever BTO had out at the time, plus the hit singles off of Cummings' first solo album.

Not sure what you mean by "It seems like every youtube mix doesn't show off the harmonies for the chorus", as this is the original version of this song. Also, not sure what you men by a "YouTube Mix"...as this is ripped from my personal album "The Guess Who - The Way They Were RCA APL1-1778 - Silver Bird"...originally recorded in 1969 (released 1976). "Silver Bird" wasn't released as a single until nearly 7 years after it was recorded, nor did it ever appear on any albums before this one.

Don't know how else to put it, but Randy was just an "expressive" guitar player. Kurt Winter was great, but Randy was able to put some emotion in, that could never be replaced.

@liberty1866 Actually had this unreleased album comeout, the criticial consensus is that it would've set the group back. Share the Land, with a revamped lineup of Winter and Leskiw on guitar. became a much stronger followup, with more edge and a string of hit singles, including the title song, Bus Rider, Hand Me Down World,& Hang on to your life. This is a pleasant folksy little ballad, and there are a few good cuts, but it's release after AW would have hurt not helped the band's momentum.

@drprogensteinphp Whoops - What I mean to say was that I had combed through quite a few versions up on Youtube and couldn't find a version where you could really hear the harmonies in the chorus. The version of the song I have really emphasizes them (I didn't realize it wasn't hte original recording - a remix, perhaps?). A friend/I were discussing the song after an evening of drinks... hence my odd terminology there lol.

It seems like every youtube mix doesn't show off the harmonies for the chorus which are just beautiful. But STILL, fantastic end-of-the-night song here. Love it.
