Christmas 1984 is the first holiday album the Mannheim Steamroller released, and it remains their definitive work. Chip Davis never strayed from the clean, airy instrumental style that he exhibits here (and earlier perfected on his Fresh Aire albums), but it is here where it all sounded fresh. It's also where he had his best selection of songs, tackling a variety of classic carols like "Deck the Halls," "We Three Kings," "Good King Wenceslas," "Wassail, Wassail," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "I Saw Three Ships," and of course, "Silent Night." Some listeners never found the Mannheim formula that engaging, but anyone who his been captured by one of their holiday records should investigate Christmas 1984, which is where it all began.

I saw this on Christmas Night 1990 as part of VH1's Christmas programming. It was one of the most moving video's I've ever seen. And on many Christmas Eves in the 90s and 2000s, I heard this on Magic 106.7 here in Boston just before Midnight on Christmas Eve. Shame on WMJX-FM for dropping their Magic of Christmas playlist.

Stille Nacht. In 1984, the track that broke Mannheim Steamroller worldwide, giving them a lasting career that continues through today . This CD has become a holiday staple in American households. The first time I heard it I was almost in tears (I had had too many beers.) Still, one of the saddest tracks I have heard. #mannheimsteamroller #mannheimsteamrollerchristmas

I close my eyes on this one, listen to it with my earbuds on, and I know just what you mean strat400 about the peace that comes over you and me. The arrangement is impeccable, carefully capturing a true silent night. It sends chills up me, but are they chills or the Spirit speaking through this rendition of Silent NIght. Merry Christmas to ALL!

Absolutely shattering, but absolutely beautiful rendition of this song (it made me cry, even in kindergarten in 1962)....Thank you, and God bless...

The remake with Santa reciting the soldier's Christmas ruins this song for me. No words are necessary for this version.
