I saw Jars of Clay do this song in person 2 nights ago. They opened up their show with Silence. It was so powerful and honest. I have been walking with Jesus for over 27 years now and I can honestly say that on more than one occasion I have felt the same way and I have had the same question. Fortunately in every instance HE showed up. HIS silence can be so "loud" if you get what I am saying. I have learned that HE is always there but HE wants us to search HIM out from time to time so that in the searching we find out about our "true selves". Thank you Jars of Clay for having the guts to be honest.
