Would the metaphor be that the generations following our forefathers, are the "sons" of sam? A play on words, as in Uncle Sam's son? In other words, we've become a nation that's collectively as sick as the murderer, Son of Sam?

This song is either about the Son of Sams murders (aka David Berkowitz) or it's about Uncle Sam and America jumping into wars trying to fix the world as the ultimate military power. If my second guess is right then im guessing he is saying we think of ourselves as the ebst and that no enemy can hide from us but also when we help someone they suffer somewhat "I'll catch you but you might break the fall"
