There is an irony in their sacrifice. They died during the period of the "hunger strikes". A period when we spent a lot of time trying and succeeding in hurting each other. It was a Dublin registered ship...their nationality was not asked as they set out to save the lost and distressed...god bless them...and peace and love to their families...brave men...

TOTAL RESPECT - I knew those on board and their families - like all RNLI crews - sheer bravery, and these men lost their lives just before xmas - Families mourned and the villagers have never really recovered! No matter where I am in the World I always try and make it to the nearest sea and I put flowers in the water for every life lost, even all these years later. PLEASE BEAR IN MIND - RNLI CREWS ARE VOLUNTEERS, No pay - just help - thank you Seth Lakeman for this! Go and see this guy immediately. Here, take my car keys.......this song has the tears flowing. Seeing the news that time was a real tragedy. Not some bloody soap stars broken marriage or the like.. Had to tell my kids that RNLI crewmen are unpaid volunteers and there isn't a lack of them on a stormy day.

Its a strange song Michelle and I say that not in an unkind way. At the time i was living in England and the hunger strikes were dominating our lives and the headlines.those who we saw as volunteers were losing their lives and we spent a lot of energy hurting each other I suppose? what struck me since re visiting this time was that some small space away time and effort was being spent on saving life rather than taking it.I hope they rest in peace and you too can find that. no better epitaph.

Watched the BBC 4 documentary last night about the Penlee lifeboat disaster. Heart wrenching and this song is amazing too. A tale of selfless heroism. A great example of how wonderful humanity can be. I feel happy and sad.

When one reads the story of the Penlee disaster... the courage of the eight men aboard that lifeboat is utterly beyond belief. The coxswain knew full well before he set off it was dangerous - he picked his crew so that no two men from the same family would be on board the lifeboat. Yet, in seas that would normally mean no ship would sail at all, they put to sea. Though they all met their end that night, it will not be in vain if we all avow to remember them.
