I think they are actually using a trick of perspective that makes him look much further away than he actually is. That famous skit with Grover demonstrating near and far uses the same trick, so Grover looks like he is getting tired out from running so far.

Yeah, it is too bad...he was one of my favorites when I was growing up. Personally I never saw Roosevelt Franklin from SS or Easy Reader from The Electric Company as perpetuating negative stereotypes. I thought both characters did a good job of teaching kids that you could be hip and cool but still enjoy reading and learning.
