Standing On The Promises (Medley)

by Selah

from the album "You Deliver Me"

Lyrics:

Standing on the promises of Christ my King

Through eternal ages let His praises ring

Glory in the highest I will shout and sing

I'm standing on the promises of God

Standing on the promises that cannot fail

When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail

By the Living Word of God I shall prevail

I'm standing on the promises of God

Standing, standing

Standing on the promises of God my Savior

Standing, standing

Standing on the promises of God

What a fellowship

What a joy divine

Leaning on the everlasting arms

What a blessedness

What a peace is mine

Leaning on the everlasting arms

I'm leaning, leaning

Safe and secure from all alarm

I'm leaning, I'm leaning

Leaning on the everlasting arms

Are you washed

In the Blood?

In the soul cleansing Blood of the Lamb

Are your garments spotless?

Are they white as snow?

Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?

Yes I'm standing, standing

Standing on the promises of God my Savior

I'm standing, standing

Standing on the promises of God

Yes I'm standing, standing

I'm standing on the promises of God

To me, there's nothing wrong with "secularizing" a Christian song. Musicians will want to lend their own interpretation to a given song, possibly rearrange it to suit their instruments & voices. It may or may not work, but the content is always there for all to bear witness.

Open up a hymn book and you will find that the lyrics sung in the video is the same as in the hymnal. You are referring to the deteriorating content of so-called "Christian" songs, yet this song has maintained the meaningful lyrics of the hymn.

"Secularise" implies the drawing away from religious orientation. In what way does altering the feel and genre while keeping the lyrics the same secularising the hymn? That's to say that the genre of a song determines whether it is secular or not. To me, it is the lyrics and its content that determines that, not the genre.

Check out Van Morrison's new CD in 2012 "Born to Sing, No Plan B" as well as "Hymms to the Silence" (Grammy winner) - a giant in the music industry, he has sung hymms and has composed songs about his own quest for God in a world that glorifies materialism. Truly amazing. His rendition of "Just A Closer Walk with Thee" is truly heart felt

Well I see things differently. Open up a hymm book from long ago and in it are words that are pure Gospel. Compare those words to the compromising rap and rock dribble that you hear today and so called christians trhat want so hard to sound like the world. NO SIR, I will not compromise Holy Praise in order to appease the world.. Sorry ,won't be selling out here. Enjoy your hip hop and rock.

I have gone to the same church all my life. Honestly, until I was 10 I had no idea that hymns even existed. Don't get me wrong, I love them now. The words bring forth a powerful message. However, times change. Sadly, music isn't just about the words now. I think for Christians to be able to compete with secular songs today is to mimic the "in" style; so that one may be able to enjoy Christ's Word through a preferred musical style. I like everything form "There Is A Fountain," to Christian metal.

That's one way to look at it. However, another way to look at it, is that they are taking these old great hymns to a generation of people who otherwise would have never heard them in their original tune or setting. I too am very much concerned about many rockish sounding "praise & worship"; but more so because the lyrics are so shallow. But when they can bring the great theology of these hymns into a contemporary setting I think its a plus.

I don't understand why we as believers in Christ Jesus have to "secularize" these beautiful old hymms. What is great desire that some belieevers have that we need to sound like the lost worlds so much. Sad that we have such a need to "fit in" with the crowd. They destroyed this precious old hymm. Hope you'all are so glad to be "hip"
