I prefer the Kinks from the Beatles. Although the beatles wrote great song i have to admit that they cant catch Ray's songwriting. Also, the beatles lasted around 10 years. The Kinks disbanded in the late 90's if i remember correctly.

Months back, I got into a little dispute with my Beatles-obsessed friend because he asked me who is more talented, Kinks or Beatles? And he got so damn angry when I said Kinks, as if there was a correct answer. Then the next day, he said that he was 'bothered' by my opinion, because The Beatles mean so much to him, and said it is perfectly fine to think that The Kinks 'sound better', but not to think that they're 'more talented'. I think that's what kind of ruined our friendship, but oh well.

I don't hear this song the same way as Peter Reed. What sounds forced to him, "and now there's no one left, 'cept my friends, friends across the river." sounds like a natural and gentle resolution to me. I only discovered this song recently and was instantly enticed by it's effortlessness and simple melancholy beauty. I had to hear it over and over. I'm so glad my 'friend' turned me on to this one.

I don't hear the sitar or the drone that supposedly influenced the Beatles. I just don't hear it.

The chord progression in "She is gone and now there's no one left to take her place" just sounds kind of generic and trite to me. But maybe that's just me.

This is a good song, very intriguing, great intro, good feel, the drone effect works well and all that. But harmonically it doesn't work so well. I'm not sure what it is or quite how to articulate it musically, but I think there's a modulation after "and now there's no one left" which doesn't quite work for me. It feels a little awkward, forced. Somehow, the sections don't seem to blend as seamlessly as they might. Also (I guess it's the bridge?), "She is gone and now there's no one left to take her place" seems out of place, harmonically maybe? It doesn't feel (to me) integrated with the rest of the song as it might be.Again, I think it's a really good song but I guess I'm just pointing out what seems to me the difference between the Beatles and the Kinks (and most groups), which is compositional acumen. This is a really good song and it's really innovative but I don't think it's compositionally flawless. The Beatles, whether they were first or not in their innovation (and it doesn't matter and they're the first ones to cite their influences), the point is they made it work. Compositionally, their songs tended to be flawless, with few sections that jump out as awkward or forced. I'm not saying the Kinks aren't a great band. Just offering food for thought.
