The song was introduced in the 1965 film The Sandpiper, with a trumpet solo by Jack Sheldon and later became a minor hit for Tony Bennett (Johnny Mandel arranged and conducted his version as well). It won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year and the Academy Award for Best Original Song.

I've always been curious to hear this material or, for that matter, anything from Bob James between his experimental and CTI periods. He and Gato Barbieri are the only two jazz artists I can think of who were able to transcend the "out" scene and re-invent themselves in the more commercial arena of early fusion or pre-smooth jazz. To see her progress from 1958 to this 1967 from deep soul to a soul that I can't think of a word to describe except magical. Her command of the song, the intelligence she gives it couldn't be duplicated today with all the electronics in the world. She pulls you in and you can't escape...but who would want to? Love it.
