I've noticed some of the comments below, and I'll make some of my own:1. Grammys, awards and record sales are not an indication of talent. These things only reflect contemporary tastes; they don't necessarily say anything about the durability of an artist2. Sarah's shaking hands are probably due to stage fright. She was very shy onstage, and only in the last years of her life did she develop a (somewhat) relaxed stage persona. 3. Sarah, like Betty Carter, tried to push songs to the furthest realms of invention. They rarely sang straight because, like Charlie Parker, neither were content to do the same rendition twice. They could do the same songs, but they had to do them differently each time. Vaughan and Carter wanted to avoid cliche and predictability. Ella Fitzgerald fit her singing to the arrangements. While she blended perfectly and her technique was flawless, her studio recordings were often staid: Will Friedwald points out that Ella simply took the arrangements as they were, sang the songs and left for the day. Sarah, unlike Ella, wanted her accompanists to fit her. Both approaches have advantages and disadvantages. Neither approach is worse - just different.

I often say it was my generation that failed to pass on the music to the next generation. If you get a chance check out Mabel Mercer she was a vocal influence on Sarah as well as Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Leontyne Price and Nat King Cole to name just a few.

What gets me is she smoked cigarettes and still had a beautiful tone, granted her voice became deeper later in life.

Ella actually did have something to say about that, she stated Sarah was "The World's Greatest Singing Talent". Ha.

For any doubters about Sarah vs. Ella, Sarah lost 7 times in Grammy competition to Ella!! I'm sure Ella got embarrassed for beating out her friend/rival so many times in Grammy competition.
