Love Sculpture were a power trio in the sixties, and featured Dave Edmunds on guitar before he launched his successful solo career.

The tune which started it for Love Sculpture was their single 'Sabre Dance' which raced up the English charts at the time. However, what prompted this single was their earlier live performance of it on 16 September 1968 on British DJ John Peel's radio show, 'Top Gear'. There was a tremendous reaction to this performance, with some people not believing it was done live or suggesting a session guitarist had done it. As a result, shortly after Love Sculpture recorded the track and released it as a single in November 1968.

This is the original live track recorded on Peel's radio show. It is rough, raw, and is not the sort of thing that people would probably want to listen to these days. In fact, Edmunds appears to have downplayed Love Sculpture when referring to his past, and performed none of their material as a solo artist, except for the occasional inclusion of 'Sabre Dance' (which these days he does with Chet Atkins type guitar fills). But for 1968, it was amazing guitar work, both this and the studio version. (As for the extra long version he did on LS's second album, 'Forms and Feelings', I think it missed the rawness of the original versions, and sadly the producers sped up the recording to give it more drive, which I think detracted from it. Still, it is fantastic guitar work in its own right).

I also love Congo's relentless propulsive drumming on this track.

I have made my own widescreen video of this track using as many images of Love Sculpture as I could find and from my own collection.

Comments are welcome.

Last heard Love Sepulture when they played at a hall on the Ely Estate, Cardiff. Dave did an excellent rendition on A Day In A Life (Beatles). Knew Congo best; used to visit when he still lived in Oxford St, Barry. Also visited him occasionally during his Sassafras days, when he and Jan lived on Newport Rd, Cardiff.

I remember hearing this on John Peel and being staggered byit! So was Peel because if my memory is correct he played it again later in the show by which time my reel to reel tape machine was ready to record it! I did buy the single when it was released but this is the better version!

This was a great Cardiff band who brought together rock and classical like no other at the time. They were contemporary with Amen Corner in their "Gin House" phase. Such a great time to be in a city which was not known for music produce such path breaking bands. The Scene Club in Canton Cardiff was the local equivalent of the Cavern and ground out some great artists including LS and DE when he went solo or with RP. Thanks for the post - it brought back many memories.

I remember seeing someone who looked like pye hastings in the lift of south kensington tube that night, but caravan were at the marquee that night and he got an electric shock there. richard sinclair told me about 10 years ago that the gun were supporting them that night, though he doesnt like too much reminiscing he said.

I didnt see them there, but at leytonstone in 1968. I went to a lot of stuff at the lyceum, perhaps the best being an all nighter with peter hammill, keith relfs renaissance, yes, and the nice. I probably heard this on radio at the time. also remember having a near miss by the guns jaguar at gants hill essex where they lived.
