The Battle of Monte Cassino between 17 January 1944 and 18 May 1944 was one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Second World War with heavy losses on both sides. It was fought by the Allies with the intention of breaking through the Winter Line and seizing Rome. One of the most important stratigic points of that defending line was the Monte Cassino, where the 1,300 years old abbey of St. Benedict stood on the top.

After American bombers had destroyed the abbey, the German Wehrmacht moved into the ruins and barricaded there for several months. After three months of bloddy fights the remaining German soldiers waved the white flag on the morning of May 18th.

The battle is also known as a battle of many nations, because of the lots of nations fighting for the Allies (what is alluded by the name "Union"). The most importand were the United Kingdom, the United States, the Free French Forces, the Polish Armed Forces in the West, Canada, British India and New Zealand.

CAUTION!

I won't tolerate any racist, discriminatory or in any other form inappropriate comments! This song neither glorifies war, nor National Socialism, but should be considered as a historical work.

"No, we don't glorify anything, we just tell stories about things that have happened." (Rikard Sundén, founding member of Sabaton)

----------

Lets not forget the actions of FJR Regiment 6 either. If it hadn't been for them, the British/Polish wounded would have died on the Slopes.Horrido!

They forgot the brazilians soldiers on the description... But at least we got Smoking Snakes so I guess it's alright since Brazil never was such of a big deal anyway...

This is one of the few battles in which I respect the German armies more than the allied ones.

Should also be noted that it was the Polish forces which finally captured the monastery.

IIRC in one of the books I have, "Battlegrounds", It mentions an event during Monte Cassino in which a group of Allied soldiers were trapped under rubble, and Axis and Allies alike worked to free them, exchanging cigarettes, and chatting, etc...

Wish Sabaton would recognize allied war crimes for once. Millions of German, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, Polish, and Hungarian women raped by the Allies. The Rape of Prussia and Battle of Berlin being the worst of these. When will there be TRUE justice handed out?

You Germans fell like Burgundians of the Nibelungenlied. Better to die than surrender to the Allies.

You know despite the Pope's blessing and all the artillery, assaults and bombing raids... the Germans held the monastery through to the end of the war.
