Estes três brasileiros foram enterrados na Italia, na segunda guerra mundial, pelos alemães com uma placa escrita "DREI BRASILIANISCHEN HELDEN" , "Os três heróis brasileiros". Foram eles: Arlindo Lúcio da Silva, Geraldo Baeta da Cruz e Geraldo Rodrigues de Souza.

The smoking snake, the mascot of the Brazilian expeditionary force sent to fight the Nazi army in Europe during World War II in response of German U-Boast attacking Brazilian shipping in the Atlantic.The expression "when the snake smokes" would be equivalent to "when pigs fly" here in the USA. At the time, many believed that was that it was more likely that one would see a snake smoking a pipe than a bunch of blacks and indians from the Brazilian army to be able to defeat Nazi soldiers in combat. So, the Brazilian army adopted the smoking snake as its mascot and that is how the expeditionary force become knows as: The Smoking Snakes. After their successful return from Europe the meaning of the expression was reversed. Instead of meaning something unlikely to happen, the expression "the snake will spoke" started to mean that something indeed would happen, and very intensely. The Swedish rock/metal band Sabaton wrote this song as a tribute to the Smoking Snakes in general and for three Brazilian soldiers in particular, who fought an entire platoon of German soldiers to their deaths, in the mountains of Italy, 1944.

Na realidade a música homenageia os três heróis brasileiros do 11º Regimento de Infantaria que resistiram em uma colina até o fim contra as tropas alemães, durante os combates em Montese. Geraldo Baêta da Cruz, 28 anos, natural de Entre Rios de Minas, Arlindo Lúcio da Silva, de 25, de São João del Rey, e Geraldo Rodrigues de Souza, de 26, de Rio Preto, na Zona da Mata, que morreram como heróis na cidade italiana de Montese, onde ocorreu uma das mais sangrentas batalhas do conflito mundial com a participação da FEB.
