I love the story behind this song. In 1967 John Lennon wrote "I am the walrus" which was three songs he was writing melded together along with some nonsensical lyrics, with the purpose of the song having no meaning. He did this after hearing that a School Teacher was asking his Students to interpret the lyrics of Beatles' songs. After writing the song said "let them work that one out!". Johnny Young decided to write a song like walrus and "the real thing" is that song. This explains the line "there’s a meaning there, but the meaning there doesn’t really mean a thing".

This track is incredibly brilliant, the best Australian track ever. As good as Friday On My Mind is, The Real Thing makes it seem trite and dated. This is a timeless record, and also the best psychedelic rock track ever, anywhere, edging out Mr Guy Fawkes and Seasons of Change, and anything the Beatles, Doors,Pink Floyd or Hendrix did.
