From their 1991 album 'The Big Wheel'.

Chan eil an t-adhar os cionn Lunnainn

A-nochd soileir no dorch

Fada bho abhainn an t-sluaigh

Gun sgial air coinneal mor latha

No reultan na h-oidhche

Fada bho abhainn an t-sluaigh

An sea s'am baile gun chadal

Gun fhois is gun saorsa

Fada bho abhainn an t-sluaigh

Casan a' gluasad

An abhainn an tuil

Fada bho abhainn an t-sluaigh

Na cuibhlichean, 's cabhaig

A' tionndaidh gun sgur

Fada bho abhainn an t-sluaigh

The skies above London Are neither clear nor dark The need to be far from the crowded river Neither the great candle of daylight Nor the stars of the night can be seen The need to be far from the crowded river In this city that never sleeps there is stillness, no quiet The need to be far from the crowded river Footsteps keep moving The river in full flood The need to be far from the crowdedriver The relentless wheels Keep turningwithout pause The need to be farfrom the crowded river

Missing Runrig is the story of my life. I didn't know about them when they came to New York in 1992 to shoot this video though I was living there. When they finally came around to play there again, I had moved out West. While the haunting images of the World Trade Center buildings in the background mark the passing of time.

Do you see the irony in the fact that you seem to want to distance yourself from Gaelic culture because of persecution, in the same way the teachers wanted to distance themselves from what they saw as further persecution? I can't help but feel you're failing to recognise the tiny nuance in this situation. Also, Inverness has not got a Gaelic heritage - you have got to be kidding me?

"those of us without Gaelic parentage", is that what it comes down to? Don't take your insecurities out on me, the fact that some people treated you different is awful but it is not indicative of the Gaelic culture of the Highlands. This is all about choice, the choice of people to chose whether or not to revive what they see as their own individual identity - an identity whcih Inverness retains untill this day! The Gaels merged 1500 years ago, the UK Government SUPRESSED only 100 years ago.

....in the manner that runrig shed tears about lowland scots with english habits... don't ya see the IRONY of that sir? Hmmm?

Which is digusting! The Gaels, the oppressors wiped out all trace of pictish language and culture! The gaelic language will have evolved differently in Scotland once it was brought over. My Gaelic identity is a secondary resuscitated identity which died when i left primary school. There is very little Gaelic about Invernessians. In response to islander teachers who stuck their nose up at those of us without Gaelic parentage, i scold you all for speaking the language of a very ancient opressor.

That's my point, we don't know what language the Picts spoke. Besides, this isn't based on race or ethnicity (that's disgusting) - this is based on our living culture, our way of life etc and that is a Gaelic identity. It's not really identical to Irish, 75% of the two languages are mutually intelligible, but they are different languages. Who are the oppressors and what are they oppressing exactly? Highland / Scottish / Gaelic culture exists, Pictish does not.

Since the gaelic is almost identical to irish gaelic, it makes sense that it was brought over by the invaders. Removing all trace of what was there before, seemingly? Wouldn't our language have been closer to brythonic language before then? Makes sense. To annoy gaels, i refuse to speak the language of the oppressor anymore!

I don't know if I'd call it 'crushing', the Pictish language (and most of its culture) is a complete mystery, it could even have been pre-Brythonic. However, the Highland culture is something which is still alive :)

I don´t think their lyrics are anti-english. They are just pro-scottish ;-) Anyway, I love most of the Runrig lyrics, they uplift your spirit.

Actually i do believe you are helping preserve the crushing of the pictish by the scots of ireland. Ahem.....

But he spent his whole life in flipping skye. This is reverse snobbery of the highlands. Trust me, i is a highlander. And a runrig fan, a gaelic speaker. I try to ignore some of their more cringeworthy anti english stuff.....
