The Lieber-Stoller "Hound Dog" was the original, it was much more widely known. They won songwriting credit in a law suit against Rufus Thomas and Memphis Recording Service, where "Bear Cat" was made.

you can put any kind of background you want, baby. love this tune! knew rufus, personally. we use to talk on the phone for hours. he was the first cat to call me a 'funky white boy'. hahaha! he'd be doin' his radio show, late night, in memphis, and i'd call him. he'd say my name on the radio (quite a thrill for a 7 year old) and tell people,"don't call me with no more requests. i got more stuff to play for my funky white boy from mississippi!" hahaha! r.i.p. rufus
