Rudy Vallee & His Connecticut Yankees

This Song Reached #6 On US Music Charts In 1934.

This Is The Laughing Version.

Rudy Vallée (July 28, 1901 -- July 3, 1986) was an American singer, actor, bandleader, and entertainer.

One of his record hits was "The Drunkard Song," popularly known as "There Is a Tavern in the Town." Vallée couldn't stop laughing during the first take, and managed a second take reasonably well. The "laughing" version was so infectious, however, that Victor released both takes. Song Written by William H. Hills.

Victor released two versions of this song. A "straight" version and one in which Rudy Valee cracks up laughing. The Laughing version was an instant hit.

There is a Tavern in the Town

Lyrics:

There is a tavern in the town, in the town

And there my true love sits him down, sits him down,

And drinks his wine as merry as can be,

And never, never thinks of me.

cho: Fare thee well, for I must leave thee,

Do not let this parting grieve thee,

And remember that the best of friends

Must part, must part.

Adieu, adieu kind friends, yes, adieu

I can no longer stay with you, stay with you,

I'll hang my harp on the weeping willow tree,

And may the world go well with thee.

He left me for a damsel dark, damsel dark,

Each Friday night they used to spark,

Used to spark,

And now my love who once was true to me

Takes this dark damsel on his knee.

And now I see him nevermore, nevermore;

He never knocks upon my door, on my door;

Oh, woe is me; he pinned a little note,

And these were all the words he wrote:

Oh, dig my grave both wide and deep, wide and deep;

Put tombstones at my head and feet, head and feet

And on my breast you may carve a turtle dove,

To signify I died of love.

Recorded on September 7, 1934. The label this was issued on was a plain white one, and had this written: "Dear Rudy: What do you say we let the public have this one? The 'slip-up' makes the record much funnier. E[dward]. Wallerstein {Victor record executive}"/"OK R Vallee"

Just read Willem Elsschot's short story "Will o' the Wisp" (1946). This song was mentioned. After searching for the song I came here. Thanks for the upload.

I learned this song in the 50's listening to it on a scratchy 78 and singing with my mother. Thank you so much for posting it. Brings back dear memories.

Great version of the song and a credit to Vallee's professionalism when he continued to sing until the last chord! Under the same circumstances, I probably would have called it quits if I broke up on a hot mic!

When I was a very small boy in the late 40's, we had this recording on a 78 record. First time I have heard this in over 50 years. Thanks for the memories.
