Ron Dante and Toni Wine of The Archies performing their #1 song from 1969, "Sugar, Sugar," on the New York City segment of the 2006 Labor Day Telethon for Muscular Dystrophy. Ron Dante was the lead vocalist for the fictional group, and Toni Wine provided the female voices on this as well as several other Archies recordings. Ron and Toni are seen here performing live on the 2006 MDA Telethon; this segment aired in the New York area only, with Tony Orlando as master of ceremonies. (You can check out Ron's performance of "Johnny B. Goode" from the same segment at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88PHZyzlI3w .)

Since 1966, the MDA Telethon, hosted by Jerry Lewis, has taken place every year on Labor Day Weekend, with stations around the country carrying the broadcast; approximately 15-20 minutes of each hour consists of segments from the local stations, exclusive to their market areas. (See http://www.mdausa.org for more details.) The Jerry Lewis MDA Telethon has raised millions of dollars for the fight against muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases.

"Sugar, Sugar" was written by Jeff Barry and Andy Kim, and the single by The Archies, with Ron and Toni's cool vocals, became the Record of the Year for 1969. Visit http://www.rondante.com , http://www.toniwine.com , and http://www.tonyorlando.com .

I like Andy, but the fact is Ron Dante has stated in an interview that Andy had never actually sang on any of the Archies songs. If you go to cosmik(dot)com and go to the page bottom, click on "back issues online", then click on "September 2000", then click on "Ron Dante". He states that Andy had NEVER sang on any of the records, although he definitely praises Andy otherwise.

@UglySean Actually, the main songwriter for the Archies was Jeff Barry - Sugar Sugar and another hit Jingle Jangle were CO-written by Andy Kim and Jeff Barry

Andy Kim wrote it. Ron Dante and Toni Wine sang it as on this clip. Ever so nostalgic.

Why didn't they film this recording session back in 1969? Such a loss of history. The Beatles filming everything and this pop song which hangs with anything pop the Beatles put out is just lost to us as just "session singers". Both are and were super photogenic. Would have loved seeing a live video of this song from 1969.

I just love this type of historical stuff! Why oh why did they not film these recordings back in 1969? You have the Beatles filming everything back then giving us a massive historical record and yet, this moment in time of this beautiful pop tune with these two beautiful vocalists is lost forever. Toni Wine is just so special. Love her voice and her songwriting ability.

That was probably because many stations refused to play "Ballad of John and Yoko" because they thought the line "Christ, you know it ain't easy" was blasphemous.
