You get calluses built up on your fingers pretty quickly, but the thumb (especially if you use it to fret the low E string like Richards does in The Worst to add the F# base note to the D chord) takes a beating in comparison. Thumb is so important as its the counter force on the back of the neck to your fret fingers.

OMG---check out Keith's injured thumb on his left hand ---a bandage can clearly be seen. It must be awful to have to play 2 hours every night for a year.

I was there---it was wild because it was halloween, the bay area idiots were all dressed up and the voodoo lounge tour sound was really good. I saw most of the tours and this one really rocked ----almost as good as the 1969 tour.
