Sonny Curtis certainly played guitar on "Midnight Shift", and given the sound and style I think it's very likely that he played on "Blue Days..." Too. Remember that this was recorded in 1956, when Buddy was still trying to get a recording deal. I think it's quite likely that these might never have surfaced had it not been for Buddy's death. But what great songs they are!

Hey a bit late but to add my pennies worth, listening to the Decca sessions the style of guitar in Blue Days, Midnight Shift, Don't Come Back Knocking et al, do not sound like any of the Nashville A team session players. I think the best example is the two versions of Ollie Vee, the first is the same style of the the others above and recorded at the same sessions, where as the second later version is very much Grady Martin's playing style. But yeah Buddy changed the world!

I think your comment may go some way to explain what was happening at the time. I understand lots of record companies jumped on the rockabilly sound coming out of Sun. If you look at the historical timeline of rockabilly it looks like Decca were a little late on the bandwagon, and i wonder if Don was more Slap style than Joe at the time or he just happened to be available. Sometimes decisions are based on simple circumstances. What counts is the Music, and Buddy's changed the world

I understand that Decca allowed Sonny to play. So i guess the question is did Sonny play the rockabilly part in the song. I can't answer knowledgeably as i have not heard enough of Sonny's playing outside of his work with Buddy. I think the Decca "three songs" represented a genre which Buddy loved but was not in his natural style of playing, and bearing in mind sonny wrote Ollie Vee, it could be that he played the rockabilly guitar parts. Does anyone out there know any more?

Hey Eddie, how about showing us "Midnight Shift".

the solo is played on 2 strings only. The E and B string. The run is quite a popular major run, so if you get this songs you will be able to use bits of it on lots of others such as Heartbeat and Cheating Heart

fast eddie, you rock! couple of questions. how can i purchase some black cadillac's for my mp3? if i cant buy it, is there a way for me to download it or something? second, i am figuring out the rythym stuff on these songs quite nicely but i have never played solos. i like your system for practicing rythym and i am making it my own, but how do you practice lead? i really like youre lead licks.

Epiphone has an ES 135 limited edition from the custom shop, with '58 humbuckers. It was $1200 list, but is being discontinued for about $450. I've played the 50's Gibson ES 135 and now own the Epi...my only regret is not getting two. This baby has *soul*! Somebody at Epiphone is doing something seriously right.

I saved for some time to get the Gibson 135, so yes it cost quite a bit. But, what really made me want the guitar was that it already had the Bigsby trem fitted. The guitar is the Memphis issue: most have a standard tailpiece. My Hondo cost less then the Bigsby i fitted on it, so there are lots of guitars out there. I have heard the vintage make of guitars are quite good.
