Is it possible to use the word tribe and not refer to an indigenous people? I hope so. I often use the word tribe to refer to my extended family of friends, as well as blood relations. I definitely don't want to offend anyone, but it seems like such a simple word.

Yes. I agree. They're from Atlanta. I wish more people knew of the older generation of musicians who preserved this music. Without them a group like RA couldn't exist. Never have I heard them give credit to the sources they learned their music from.

I am also a musicator...with 123 un-published or recorded songs...looking to collaborate &/or donate...they all say things of importance..or tell stories common to us all. Peace...Chard

*OKAY I'M A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED THAT THIS GROUP IS NOT ON THE LINEUP FOR THIS YEAR'S PHILADELPHIA FOLK FESTIVAL.*Rising Appalachia or "R.I.S.E." as they are sometimes called are more of an art collective than a group sometimes but the core of the group consists of two sisters Leah & Chloe Smith who hail from Atlanta Georgia. Rising Appalachia now call New Orleans Louisiana their home now. Here is a great track of them *live* at the "Floyd Fest"s Dance Stage singing an old American standard; "I'll Fly Away".#musicmonday

You might as well get used to it, in the future there will be even more cultural appropriation, if anything it should be encouraged; the more exposure people have to different cultures the more people will embrace our differences rather than segregate themselves or others.

What is wrong with cultural appropriation exactly? I mean I watch these women and they actually have international individuals in their band. Not here, but they're are there. Look at their video SUNU.

Just heard of these lovely ladies through Nahko & Medicine for the People. Knew if Nahko was diggin' them, they had to be good ;) And... I was right! I'm loving Rising Appalachia. What beautiful stage presence and positive energy you ladies exude! I'm a new and instant fan. Continue the beautiful work you're doing! Blessings <3

Based upon some of the comments about cultural appropriation in here, if artists were so limited, music never would have evolved over the ages! What a limited pov.

They're artists, everything is game.

Indeed. If "cultural appropriation" is bad you might as well throw away the Beatles later works when they utilized sitars and Indian musical influences. Led Zepplin and the Stones outright admit they drew heavily from The Blues - in fact, most all rock-n-roll borrows heavily from the Blues tradition. I guess that makes them bad too. - And "cowboy music" and Bluegrass draw heavily from Irish Folk traditions, is that evil cultural appropriation if the writers and singers aren't ethnic Irish?

Wow I love them and really nice girls. FYI face paint and the word tribe are not exclusive to the First Nations..tribes are also family, kinship and also consist of clans with in a tribe depending on where they are from..

I think it is wonderful that they are introducing traditional tunes to newer audiences and have their unique "take" on the music, which not only keeps the music alive, but creates an atmosphere where the audience is encouraged to explore their own musical roots, and traditional Appalachian music as well. "Purist" is a misnomer- what musician and what music hasn't been influenced, Appalachian music included, by other cultures and musical traditions?

LOL and who the fuck are you, the culture police? I never once heard the word "tribe" mentioned and if you are referring to the "Appalachian" comment that is a mountain range not a "First Nation/Indian tribe".
