#pop Bariton Todd Duncan, member of the original cast of *Porgy and Bess*, was the first who recorded this song for the soundtrack of a now forgotten prison movie, *Unchained* (1955). The song reflects the mood of the prisoners as they wait for time to pass. An instrumental version by Les Baxter and his orchestra made it to position 2 in the US charts (1955). The vocal version of Al Hibler hit the US charts in 1955 too. Jimmy Young reached with a cover the top postion in the UK charts (1955). More than 500 covers are made so far. Best known is the one recorded by Bobby Hatfield and released under the name of the Righteous Brothers, a musical duo Bobby had formed with Bill Medley. For their new album both of them were allowed to record one solo track, *Unchained Melody* was Bobby’s choice. It hit the charts twice: in 1965 and in 1990 (used for the soundtrack of *Ghost*).Phil Spector did not produce this song, Bill Medley did. It was released by Spector’s record company, *Philles Records*, and Spector considered it as ‘album filler’ and used it as the flip side to a promotional single for Gerry Goffin and Carole King’s *Hung on You*. Phil became sour when DJ’s gave *Unchained Melody* a lot more airplay than the A side he himself produced. Although he considers himself not a producer Bill Medley produced a lot of albums for *Philles Records* in Spector’s name.The 1990 hit were in fact two different covers. The original 1965 version, the Righteous Brothers didn’t own the rights for it anymore, and a new version for Bill Medley’s current record label *Curb*. The original got the airplay, the new one made the sales. The owner of the original was surprised by the sudden popularity of the old song and couldn’t manage to press new copies in time.
