I played Maureen in the New York Theatre Workshop first staged reading, and Jonathan designed Maureen originally to be a Laurie Anderson-type performance artist, very different from what it became. I didn't play cello in the original, but this is pretty much what I did otherwise from start.

@BrandonNichols The problem was that the NYTW version of RENT version of Maureen did more of a conventional performance piece. Sarah Knowlton, who played Maureen originally played the cello. But Idina doesn't, and they realized it'd be hard to only hire actresses who did. And they also changed the metaphor from Oedipus to "Hey Diddle Diddle the Cat & the Fiddle"

This is so interesting to hear... it's so different- the presentation of the performance, the dream, the interpretation of Maureen's character. But for those reviewers who dislike/son't understand the strange calm voice she's singing with in this admittedly odd song, this song is supposed to be making fun of some performance artists- those who take themselves way too seriously with their strange, overly dramatic performances they do "to make a statement".
