I think the lyrics are really a code to bisexuals, and the whole quoted "Dan rather story" is only a small part of it. "I thought I'd pegged you an idiot's dream" is a not-so-veiled reference to how people generally dismiss bi people as "confused." Sexually is being compared to radio frequencies, with bisexuality being ironically two frequencies on the same channel, something impossible to fully understand or explain, and the resigned final line: "I never understood, don't f**k with me" the clincher. Also, "I studied your cartoons, radio, music, TV, movies, magazines," a bi person examining the oblivious, often exclusive culture of heterosexuals and homosexuals, followed by "Richard said withdrawal in disgust is not the same as apathy," the feeling of being left out, disgusted, and withdrawing from mainstream culture as a result. I recall many years ago reading an interview with Stipe where he admitted this song was a sort of "anthem for bisexuals" or something like that, I'm paraphrasing mightily here.

K Kipp is correct that I was incorrect. While replying to this comment, I opened the song in two different tabs. Everyone try it - it's amazing! It was indeed Dan Rather that the paranoid fella ambushed. Seriously tho - this sounds incredible on two tabs with a time delay. That may be how he heard it too...

Microtherion isn't correct. We checked Wikipedia: "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?" is a song by the American alternative rock group R.E.M. from their 1994 album Monster. It was the first single taken from the album, released three weeks later. It peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 9 on the UK Singles Chart, and was the first song to debut at number one on Billboard Modern Rock Tracks.[3] The song's title refers to an incident in New York City in 1986, when two then-unknown assailants attacked journalist Dan Rather, while repeating "Kenneth, what is the frequency?"

I'm sure someone's mentioned this before but the song was inspired by a news story. Some guy with paranoid schizophrenia believed his brain was being controlled by Ultra-Low Frequency radio noise. He went to an event where a politician (Kenneth something) was giving a speech and knocked him to the ground screaming 'What's the frequency, Kenneth?' Okay, he was mad but the question was valid...

Back in middle school, one of my teachers used to tease me by asking me "What's the frequency, Kenneth?" and I would never know the answer to it (My first name is Kenneth). Later, he told me it was the name of this song.Ugh, I'll never be able to live that down -_-U
