Chappers customises 7string for 'The Story'

Rob was having some difficulty getting the right tension on a standard scale-length guitar, so for the first time, he decided to use a 7 string... with a difference.

If you want to learn 7, the best thing to do is learn 6 string songs on it. You have to learn how to navigate around that extra string. After you can pick up a 7 and play 6 string songs on it without any issues, then you can start adding that low string into your writing or use it to make some chords sound massive.Or you can really just do riffing on the lowest strings and just learn how to move the patterns you're familiar with down to the point where they're in key with the low string. which is sort of what I did. I played 6 for something like 10 years before switching to 7 and there was certainly a learning curve but once you get passed that, it will make playing extended range guitars much easier. I for example had no issue playing an 8 after I had become familiar with how my 7s work.

For A# tuning you should use medium baritone strings(14-70 I think)

Hey +Rob Chapman, Wes Borland used to put a double high E on his 7 strings to still have the feel of the 7 string neck and the tuning of the 6 string.

Maybe use the Base 6 and customize the strings to fit your project?

Why don't you just use a baratone guitar?

I don't know if its just me or is this a really convoluted solution to a non-problem? I'm sure a baritone could be bought cheap enough or even borrowed from someone if its just for a gig or two. Or use heavier strings than 12s. Or just get used to a seven string. I mean no disrespect, but when people do stuff like this it reminds me of that kid in college who wants to be that little bit different. Everyone knows that kid who tuned all his strings to E (and no I don't mean Joe Satriani) or took one string off because he was too cool for it.

Why don't you make a Chapman Baritone? Like an ML-B or something :D

Could you not use all 7 strings, strung BEADF#BE? Lowest 6 strings would be Baritone tuning, with added high E for soloing and you wouldn't lose much tension.

You should make this model in a six-string version though

Also please make a baritone chapman. Preferably a double cut style for comfy upper access!

I use daddario 13- 62 or 14-68 baritones on my ml2 for b tuning or a tuning. Might feel better than the extra neck wood. I also use the chromes flatwounds 14s set and add a lower guage too for less finger slide noises on recordings etc.

I don't get it...loomis and merrow use 9-46 and a 62 at the bottom...how do you have 12-52 and STILL find it floppy?!?!?! That makes no sense...??? it's a 7 string and has the extra inch of scale length...ok you got rid of the Eb string at the top, that still leaves you with normal Bb to Bb tuning...???

I have a 24.75" scale guitar tuned to drop-A. It was really hard to find the right set of strings for it to get rid of the tuning and intonation problem. Tried the .13-.62 set from D'addario, but the lower string wasn't vibrating enough and had massive intonation problems. Then went to a set with 13-.17-.28-.38-.48-.60 strings and it sounds great, Although I had to leave my guitar alone for about 2 months to get it sound how I wanted it to sound and to also get the intonation almost perfect.
