Quite beautifully played with depth and sensitivity, I only wish the piano had been in tune!

I definitely prefer the piano solo to the orchestral rendition of this piece. The solo is able to bring out the hauntingly lonely and melancholy feel.

As a non-expert, i can just listen with my heart, and this piece played in this way is just moving.

actually it's the other way around. He intended for it to be played slow and the interpretations he heard were way to fast.

Ravel himself stated that the interpretations he had heard were too slow. This song is supposed to be for a processional dance, not a funeral. In the words of Ravel, it's "Pavane for a dead princess", not "dead Pavane for a princess".

I would naturally lean towards a similar performance but there really isn't such a thing as a "poor" interpretation imo, unless of course one is ignoring what is written by the composer.

I agree. From 35 to 45 seconds, not good.

*for the orchestra version

None that I've heard of at least. At least not the ones you can download from IMSLP. Remember that the orchestra version all the strings are written as staccato. Still think that's a very original and at the same time completely respectful interpretation.

Is there a version of the piano score with no sustain pedal? Are you sure? Because all the sheet music i've seen has the "Ped." symbol, from the "trés lointain" to the end of the piece.

According to what? To all the interpretations we've heard so far? Traditionally I agree this piece is usually more dolce but looking at the score.... Well he's got a tempo around 58 (though score says 54 but well that's less than 7% faster). Here again, this interpretation is one of the very few that respects the staccato and the absence of sustain pedal in the score... So before overly criticizing check out the score again! ;)
