January 19th 1978. Radio Stars and an unnamed newsreader (in fact one-time beaver enthusiast Kelly St John) appear on Top of the Pops in order to plug their new single. The following day, it crashes out of the chart. The Curse of Jet had struck again. But at least the trousers were improved. Some of them.

I must have been the only other person to buy this in Gillingham in 1978. Although my jilt experience came a couple of years later. Happy days.

@ sequentialable12: I'm sorry, what is 'buy'? I am not aware of this activity in connection to music. Perhaps it is a new trend sparked off by mumbling teenagers with low-hanging jeans and large shoes?

@James McQuarrie - Thank you, you are clearly a discerning sort! We did our best. Actually I remember that gig as being particularly good.

25 yrs later, my brother and I still agree that the best gig (and he became stage manager at SECC in Glasgow) we ever went to was Squeeze, Radio Stars, and Eddie and the Hot Rods in Cardiff Top rank, 1978.By far the best band on the bill were Radio Stars! They were so unbelievibley entertainingly brilliant. Gods bless 'em. The best of Rock and Roll.

Saw them at Birmingham Town Hall in 1978 as well. Supporting Eddie and the Hot Rods. They were fun. "Elvis is dead boring". Elvis had just died obviously.

@GravityBoy72 Well done! You were certainly setting a precedent by returning mikes which been nicked, I can tell you this much... Slap on the back rather than pucnh in the face, old boy.

I met them after their gig at Barbarella's in Birmingham around 1977. I was on stage at the end singing into the mic (lots of us were). The mic came off the lead and I put it in my pocket. I gave it back to the roadie after 15 minutes though. I was completely pissed. I asked for their "scrawl" (autograph) when they were having a drink afterwards. They were very kind. I deservered a punch in the face. Happy days. Or not.

@ John Ashdown You might be right, on reflection. But you should have joined the Singing Policemen at the Metro, you know. Will there be another chance? Not looking very likely at present...

Nah! It was 1978! I became Jilted John to a girl who wouldn't leave her boyfriend for me at exactly that month and date, January '78 and Nervous Wreck was a deffo backdrop to that sorry episode of unrequited love in Gillingham, Kent. In tune back then, yes but I wasn't brave enough to go on stage and sing at the Metro gig when policemen were needed on stage for BVs. The shame! Can't believe I missed the 100 Club gig when's the next London one?

@ John Ashdown I thought being pedantic was illegal? But I know what you mean. However, I'm pretty sure that it was 1977... Staying in tune is always a good idea, well done!

Not sure if this is very pedantic but the year was 1978 not 1977 and this is one of the TOTP episodes that the Beeb is not showing now because of... well you know the reason why! Good tune though and when I saw them at the Metro, London a few years ago for their 35th anniversary gig it still sounded good then. Martin Gordon is still an ace tunesmith and Andy Ellison is still a hero to me as I got to co-sing "No Russians In Russia" with him at a 1993 RS Marquee gig! And I stayed in tune.
