An amazing song that should be on YouTube =) Turn annotations on for lyrics or see below...

Dear friends, I have a sad story

A very sad story to tell

I married a man for his money

And he's worse than the devil himself

I'll go and I'll get blue bleezing blind drunk

Just to give Mickey a warning

And just for to spite I'll stay out all night

And come rolling home drunk in the morning

When Mickey comes home in the evening

He batters me all black and blue

He knocks me about from the kitchen

From the bedroom right through to the room

Of whiskey I ne'er was a lover

But what can a poor woman do?

Oh I'll go and I'll drown all my sorrows

But I wish I could drown Mickey too

Oh I'll go and I'll get blue bleezing blind drunk

Just to give Mickey a warning

And just for to spite I might stay out all night

And come rolling home drunk in the morning

Oh friends, I have a sad story

A very sad story to tell

Oh I married a man for his money

And he's worse than the devil himself

Oh I'll go and I'll get blue bleezing blind drunk

Just to give Mickey a warning

And just for to spite I'll stay out all night

And come rolling home drunk in the morning

Oh I'll go and I'll get blue bleezing blind drunk

Just to give Mickey a warning

And just for to spite I'll stay out all night

And come rolling home drunk in the morning

Same as Kirsty Andrews my Granny sang this song but not slow;y at beginning. I always assumed it was either a Scottish or Irish folk song ( we are Scots/Irish descent). I loved it when I heard it every New Year until 1965 when my Granny passed away. I never remembered the verses only the chorus and that's how I found it here... thanks lasses for this memory brought back to melodically.

Local heroes, amazing talent and really nice people. Becky is actually a lot more cheerful than she seems on camera.

Belle Stewart also sang Betsy Bell which the Unthanks also do. Don't know how old that is though.

@flexi712 this is a really old folk song, my granny used to sing it, only a slightly different version

Oh this is great stuff! Is that a traditional song or did they write it? Love the Geordie accent too.

@theredreceivers Because she wanted to go to university, and didn’t want to/wasn’t force to commit herself entirely to the band. The change to “the unthanks” represents Becky’s complete commitment to the band.

@0666barry6660 This is a bit late: it is just E minor moving to E major. What makes it sound so weird is the cromatic voice leading: D, Eb, E. Makes it almost polytonality.

If Becky has been in the band all along, why was it called Rachel Unthank and the Winterset?.

I saw the girls in a small jazz/folk bar in Bridgwater back in 2007 and they blew us all away - so unpretentious, raw and heart-felt.
