This song saved my young credibility. I saw this performance as the credits rolled at the end of TOTP in 1974 and I was spellbound. While still at school, everyone was talking about Led Zeppelin or Tubular Bells which I knew nothing about. How could you have street cred at school if you said you liked Abba? If you were heard singing Tiger Feet by Mud? If the only music you listened to was bootleg recorded off the Sunday chart show?I went into school excitedly the next day and asked who else had seen it. No one had. Everyone had switched channel after number one. ‘Cream?’ I was asked, every time I mentioned Queen.(I quickly learned not to mention that Seven Seas finished with ‘I do like to be beside the seaside’!!!)‘Queen II’ became the first album I bought that wasn’t just a KTel compilation or greatest hits. The original ‘Queen’ album quickly followed.By the time of ‘Killer Queen’ my class mates had caught me up, rather than the other way around, and I could proclaim I had Queen earmarked two years earlier.And I still have a wry smile when people think Queen started with ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’, ‘Bicycle Race’, ‘I Want to Break Free’ or at Wembley in 1986!
