Freddie developed full blown AIDS in 1987 - therefore he last around 4 years. He contracted HIV in the late 1970s or early 1980s - the median time from contraction of HIV to the development of AIDS is around ±10 years. From the time he developed AIDS in 1987 till 1991 when he died, he was taking several drugs which helped him survive. Amongst them was AZT, which started being used for AIDS treatment in 1987. He also volunteered to try experimental drugs.

But how could he have lasted until 1991, back then there wasan't any treatment for Aids and it usually killed someone within 1 or 2 years of diagnosis. Sorry for sounding a bit stupid but I don't really get how he could have lasted that long.

wrong, according to peter freestones book freddie didn't knew that he was hiv+, he only may had a thought or two, he was actually afraid of being tested. then, in 1987 he saw he had little brown marks on back side of his hands, he went to doctors who analyzed his flesh and find out that he already had full blown aids. hope this clears some things for you guys :)
