Theorbo sounds like a jackhammer. Too bad, the singing is lovely. I never understood, though, how Nero and Poppaea could sing such a beautiful duet after committing so many terrible deeds. Like a concentration camp commandant enjoying a fine meal after putting in a day at the gas works.

Lovely music but I was somewhat distracted by the stunning lack of chemistry between the two singers - one might suppose they had quarrelled viciously in the corridor prior to starting! Poor Pluhar does try the occasional timid glance at her co-duettist but Jaroussky keeps his gaze rigidly forward giving no response. Amazing that either could manage to succeed in singing these words while displaying such cold body language!By the way does anyone know how strong is the attribution of this music to Benedetto Ferrari (1603-1681)? He was a composer/librettist around the time when Monteverdi died leaving Poppaea unfinished, with the final scene not in the published text. The "Pur te stringo" lyric appears in Ferrari's 1640/1 opera, "Il pastor regio." I recently heard another piece by Ferrari on the CD "Canta la Maddalena" (hymns to the Magdalen) which had strikingly similar use of suspensions and cadences to those in "Pur te stringo". It was a bit of a shock when I heard it might not be by Monteverdi but I've got over it,  the music is still awesome.
