This is the most popular number in the Orchestral Suite that comes from the score Prokofiev wrote for the 1934 Soviet film "Lieutenant Kije." A 'troika' is a three-horse sleigh, so this music is often heard at Christmas time. In this superb 1950s stereo recording, Anatole Fistoulari conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra. actually this has nothing to do with Christmas. In the film, the officer who caused the whole Lieutenant Kizhe mess is traveling with an outpost commander in the troika sled, getting progressively drunken on vodka and finally crashing at their destination. The song is more about how love is like an inn where women go out and go in. Still, it has become a quintessential Russian theme and a cherished Christmas song. ej
