The tempo is up to the conductor to decide, if you don't like it don't listen to it. My mother a concert pianist, always said that, it is the responsibility of the conductor to interpolate and dictate how the music flows, as he sees it.

This is the version I remember of this from my childhood. It was on red RPM's that were left on a radiator and warped as a result. I have never forgotten this version and love it. I have never heard this played up-tempo like this. Were I a conductor, I would perform it just like this. Thanks so much for posting this.

And personally, I believe that you are merely trying to find something to dislike with this piece. It is the "classical" symphony, not the "symphony in the style of Mozart and Haydn." It is a touch romantic, but that's only understandable.

This sounds just as I expected: Prokofiev trying to write in the style of Mozart and Haydn. That being said, it is terribly awkward at times and lacks the delicacy and deftness of the classicists.

I'm sure the tempo is correct for the time, but I almost always prefer a slower tempo to this. It sounds like they are rushing to finish it and go home.

I have written elsewhere about tempo (not that my view is definitive!) and the tempo here seems just right. We are so used to orchestras using the amazing power of modern, nearly faultless instruments that composers seem to enjoy slowing down the action and allowing them sway over the tempo that was - probably - suggested by the composer. So much discussion about tempo here - its useful to remember that this recording is now 65 years old. If you think its too speedy - remember that you yourself are part of an ongoing cultural discussion about these works that Koussevitsky contributed to before you were probably even born. His tempo is valid for his time, according to how the work was viewed (much closer to Ps lifetime than now) and the orchestral practice of the time. PS: I think it rips!!

Sounds kinda Haydn or Mozart , guess that's why its called classical , I'm such a dumbass lol but this is a very memorable piece , listening to it a couple of times now , trying to get into Prokofiev

this is played too fast for my taste, Prokofiev's is fast music, but let's not cross over the point, where caricature begins...

....any slower and the public falls asleep...the Toscanini version remains my favorite, and the Bernstein is vigorous too....

I've heard Symphony 1 hundreds of times, more! and I have no problem with the speed here. It's unique but all of a piece, sweet and searing where it needs to be and busily charming otherwise. It does not "feel" pushed, but concise.
