I have nearly, finished reading a book called " For crew and Country", the story of The USS Samuel B Roberts, Destroyer Escort, in the battle of Leyte Gulf, pacific theater, 1944. The book focuses on the heroism of the little Sammy B, charging into the insurmountable Power of four Japanese battleships, four heavy cruisers, and about eight Jap destroyers! This book is not for the squeamish. In this book, we learn about men who's bravery was beyond belief. The little Sammy scored torpedo hits on a Jap cruiser, and with its little 5" guns, turned another cruiser into a near floating flaming wreck. However, during the battle, the Sammy suffered multiple direct hits of Jap battleships 14" and 8" shells. According to the survivors, ( Including the Captain, Lt Commander Robert Copeland) the carnage aboard the Sammy before she went down, was ghastly beyond description. Men, practically melted and fused to the ship, some in pieces, some, mercifully just vanishing. Even the survivors, had to endure 50 hours in the sea, before being rescued. So my thoughts went to this song. The connection is now obvious. Gary Brooker when he wrote this song, I'm sure meant to describe the fate, maybe not about the Sammy but other ships that met similar fates. Great story telling and music about heroism and mind numbing bravery. His incredible voice really captures the spirit of men and ships like the Sammy.
