To me this song is about priests molesting young boys. You have all the references to Christianity and bowing (which represent kneeling and praying). There are references to lamb and martyr. The victim being sacrificial and a martyr for the priests own twisted religious excuses that he assures his victim with. If my memory serves me right Maynard had a devout Catholic mother so he would be well versed in such things.

The official statement from Maynard about the subject of this song is that the "you" that is being referenced in this song is himself, that it is a person addressing himself regarding his own abuses and failures. It's about recognizing your own flaws to improve yourself as a person.

It amazes me that there's zombies among us who think that emotions don't exist like the shit stain below me. I know 1st hand about being abused as a child ands into adulthood the never ending wheel continues to spin. Maynard is a very enlightened man. People like the shit stain below me have no business listening to Tool!!! Think about the name Tool? A tool is an object that gets things done. Moves a person forward. Our THIRD EYE is our own Tool that Maynard has gifted us with by teaching us how to keep it open. By opening it and being aware that we're not some special banana tree that the world's lined up to pick fruit from and we're not stale and molded because the world never loved us. To do unto another what they have done to you in the past or present is simply an eye for an eye and/or people reap what they sow. This like so many other Tool songs is a reminder that we need to treat others with respect honor love and kindness. If we don't we have no one to blame when a pile of wet stinky shit lands in our laps. To be an atheist & listen to Tool must be hard. I do however realize that they are as dumb as an infant and must not understand words and their meanings. Maynard is anything but an atheist! It takes common sense to know and figure that out though. Everything we hear and see has already been said in the lambs book of life.
