From the album Sargasso Sea (1995)

After garnering many positive reviews for their early releases, reviews for Sargasso Sea were largely mixed or negative (notoriously, the NME gave the album a scathing review and rated it a 0 out of 10); album sales were weak and the band was subsequently dropped from their label. Although retrospective reviews have been more positive, to this day Sargasso Sea is often compared negatively to the band's other albums. However, I would argue that this album has been unfairly maligned and is in serious need of a critical re-evaluation.

Sargasso Sea is not an album that many people are going to "get" or enjoy on a single listen - even fans of Pram. Like a lot of great albums, it's not quite like anything you've heard before, so it may take a few listens for it to "click" - but when it does, you'll keep coming back to it. Like Damo Suzuki-era Can or the best of Stereolab's early work, repeated listens reveal new sounds and subtle instrumentation that may have gone unnoticed during the first few or even first dozen listens. I HIGHLY recommend listening to this one with headphones...preferably while lying in the dark contemplating the infinite. So listen, enjoy, buy a copy (if you can find one), spread the word.

I love this band, so childish and mellow yet deep and ethereal. When has a sax sounded so relaxing. The texture is so rich and delicate. I guess the best things in life will always be hidden.

I discovered this song very recently and as soon as I heard it I couldn't imagine it not having been in my consciousness. Instantly one of my top not very many ever. Just everything about it.  Beautifully constructed yet feeling effortless and gently taking you into yourself, away from yourself, and takes you to all the hidden corners of all that is beautiful and mysterious and calming and bewitching.  I don't like everything they have done, but they still make most contemporary popular music look very silly.

The 0\10 review says far more about the ridiculousness of the NME at the time (and pretty much since) than Pram. Much of the mainstream music press was busy plugging the reactionary meat-and-potatoes rock of bands like Oasis. Hating bands like Pram was a way they signalled rejection of the subtle, experimental and forward looking music that preceded the tedium of Britrock/pop and hitching themselves to the latest bandwagon in a sad effort to flog a few more copies. Publications that focused on non-mainstream music such as The Wire were much more positive.

Sargasso Sea is what introduced me to Pram. I think of this band and Young Marble Giants in the same way, they're subtle and really cool, not everyone gets them, even after a couple listens though.
