I started self harming by either scratching my face or pinching my legs or arms when I was young, whenever I felt I was a bad kid, when mom would explode on me vocally and I really didn't understand why. As I got older the self harm morphed into scratching rows down my arms with safety pins (they had to be even numbers) until I bled. Many times the scratches were crosses. I know for people who don't do this sort of thing, it (at least for me) diverts my mind from more painful thoughts of being a failure or doing something that hurt someone (usually saying something without thinking first). I don't like hurting others in any way and when I know I have, I feel the need to self harm in some way I guess because I feel I deserve it. I've come a long way through the years, but it is still VERY hard sometimes to ignore the impulse and need to do it, like when our 26 year old daughter died of Sudden Cardiac Arrest here at home. Nobody could make me feel like I wasn't at fault for her death. I am her mother and mothers PROTECT their children, but she was gone before I even entered the room that she died in. It was very quick and totally unexpected. She left behind a 4 year old son that misses her terribly. Her and his bio father broke up when he found out she was pregnant with him, so the poor thing lost the only bio parent that cared about him when his mommy died. :'( Not only that, but I am married to a 1983 Beirut Bombing Veteran who I have tried for 32 years to help to no avail. Our marriage is falling apart and we don't talk much, so this song really hits me hard. Yes, it makes me cry, but it feels good knowing I am NOT alone with this problem.
