it is fun to compare this version with "lily of the west" with Mark Knopfler and the Chieftains as it is the same story, same tune, different lyrics and a similar deep emotion. Who knows maybe some day Danny Lanois will do an instrumental of it on an old guitar;

In my humble opinion the Paul Brady version is unsurpassable. But what do I know!

Ha, what a kicker! Ididn't realize, thanks. Which one is Christy, the second on the right with those unruly muttonchops? I'm trying to work ot a version of this song to sing and play on the guitar, and I love this version.

Completely underated version of the song, different but comparable to Christy Moore's on many levels.

Cuantas noches me dormí escuchándola. Gracias

Listen to the arrangement and watch his right hand...

I have heard Christy speak many times and for many years - I'm from north Kildare and the same age.

If you want the guy to weep then Paul Brady's version isn't going to do the trick since his wailing sucks all the emotion out of the song.

Urm... Have you ever heard Christy speak? This is his accent. The reason it might sound a little more high-pitched and leprechaun-y is partially the song's pitch and partially because this is pretty early stuff; when he was younger this was just his voice, I guess it got deeper as he got older, like many men's voices do.

What an awful bloody poser Moore is - the exaggerated brogue in all his work drives me up the wall. It's like Donovan in his late career singing in a false Scots accent - utterly devoid of authenticity

I don't hate this. An old cashier at an antique shop suggested this band to me. I am charmed by this song. I was skeptical at first when he mentioned the genre but this is unique and tasteful.

I reckon that Paul Brady's is the best version IMO although I like this one as well
