(Very sorry about the length, I tend to get a bit overenthusiastic when interpreting things).One of the many things this song seems to be about (like most great songs it has many, many levels) is the the Doctor (Doctor Who). My reason for thinking this? "A box I choose, no other box I choose to use" to me is the TARDIS, the Doctor's little blue box. "Something borrowed, something blue" also could describe the TARDIS, as even if not yet described in that manner in canon when this song was written (I have no idea if it was or not) I'm sure some people might have been reminded of the TARDIS when they heard the cliche, even before it was used on the show. "All alone in space and time" reflects the Doctor's loneliness as well as the whole space and time thing in the show. "Someone to bruise and leave behind" could refer to the companions, who become close friends to the Doctor, but who in the end he always has to leave behind, even though he knows that this will hurt them.This and "Another love I would abuse" both echo the guilt the Doctor feels over having to hurt the people he loves, the latter doing so less directly by identifying the aforementioned box that I think is the TARDIS as someone else he cares about that he is treating selfishly. That theme shows up again when he identifies himself as "selfish and unkind'. "My body's broken, yours is bent" seems to be refering to how old both the Doctor and the TARDIS are and how they are becoming more metaphorically broken and bent as time wears on. The line before that, "My heart's a tart, your body's rent" has at least two possible meanings within my interpretation, depending on which definition of rent you think is being used. If it is rent as in torn, the two are seperate statements, "My heart's a tart" (tart of course meaning whore) referring to how the Doctor giving his heart (platonically, and yes, I am aware he actually has two hearts) to anyone who takes away his loneliness, and "your body's rent" being even more metaphor for the damage slowly being wrought on the TARDIS as more and more time passes. Alternatively, if rent is taken to mean payment for lodgings, the two statements become linked; The line "My heart's a tart, your body's rent" can be taken to mean that just as a prostitute (a 'tart') needs her rent money to survive, his spirit (heart) needs the TARDIS to survive, making it in part a relationship of necessity. Now, I have no idea if this song was at all inspired by Doctor Who. Still, when I first heard it, I actually believed it was a particularly well done fan song based on the show. I do realize that there is a good chance most of the similarities are sheer coincidence. If so, it is on of the most awesome coincidences of all time. This seems to me the type of song meant to be interpreted in many ways, so it would make sense for it to potentially acquire new meanings the creator/s had not thought of themselves. After all, in art, meaning comes as much from the audience as it does the creator. Perhaps Doctor Who did inspire some of this song, even if only from the depths of the creators' subconsciouses (I hope I spelled that one right). Perhaps the similarities are just a rare and beautiful breed of coincidence. Whatever the case, I think we can all agree that this song is sheer awesomeness, no matter what the motivations behind it may have been.
