I just heard this song in my dream, I haven't listened to Phil Ochs in quite a while... Kinda weird hmm.. Great personality and his lyrics are very important, they share critical messages.. And this one reminded me of something I needed :)

I weep for the mental pain Phil suffered and I am ever grateful for the balm his music has always been for my soul

Phil's breakdown was a combination of bi-polar disorder (called manic-depressive psychosis, at the time) and caring too much and feeling impotent to do what needed to be done. Many of us in the Movement at the time got discouraged, but were able to carry on in the absence of serious mental illness. Phil's illness and death hurt us all deeply. He was a very good man and it still hurts those of us who knew him to hear him belittled. And Wikipedia is far from infallible.

Yes, the terrible summer of John Butler Train, from which he just couldn't find the strength to recover. I love you, Phil, every day of my life. RIP My beautiful friend.

If you truly love and believe in Phil any music he sang was relevant. He was courageous and truthful all the way to his death. I only wish he was still here today to sing about the government and the politicians and the downfall of democracy. Miss you Phil

is that really a difference? Or important? Phil gave me so much with his songs, me and others. If he failed in any case - who is free from failing? thank you, Phil, that you have be the person who you are.

"so when it was time to leave he left rather than linger and besmirch the sweet images he gave us." Horrible

I am sorry, but I don't believe you can say that. Phil left show business because he lost his mind. He suffered from bi-polar disorder and had self medicated with alcohol for many years. Eventually he didn't even know his own name and commited suicide. There is no question his later work did not match his early work. See wikipiedia.

Phil, unlike the ego and drug fueled rock stars of his era, gave his all for the cause and nothing else. He wasn't a slave to his ego so when it was time to leave he left rather than linger and besmirch the sweet images he gave us.
